Fasting is one of the most powerful ways to deepen your walk with Christ.

It’s not just about skipping meals but about replacing that time with prayer, worship, and reflection on God’s Word.

If you are new to fasting, don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Let this be an exciting opportunity to draw closer to God and see Him work in your life in incredible ways.

What is Fasting?

Fasting, in the Christian sense, is the practice of abstaining from food (or other things) to focus more on God. The Bible shows us countless examples of fasting as a way to seek God’s guidance, repent, or prepare for a significant spiritual breakthrough.

Take Jesus, for instance. Before starting His ministry, He fasted for 40 days and nights in the wilderness, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” – Matthew 4:1-2

The Bible says, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” - Matthew 4:4. This shows that fasting isn’t just about giving something up — it’s about filling that space with God’s presence.

Why Should Christians Fast?

Here are a few key reasons:

1. To Seek God’s Guidance: Acts 13:2-3 shows the early church fasting and praying before sending out missionaries. “As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them off.”

2. To Strengthen Our Prayer Life: Ezra 8:23 says, “So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.”

3. To Deepen Our Relationship with God: Fasting clears distractions, helping us hear His voice more clearly.

4. To Surrender Fully to God: It’s a physical act of dependence on Him.

How to Prepare for Your First Fast

If you have never fasted before, don’t worry, God honours even small steps of faith. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide:

1. Start With Prayer

Begin by asking God to prepare your heart and give you strength. Share your desire to fast with Him, and ask for guidance. A simple prayer could be:

“Lord, I want to honour You through fasting. Help me to focus on You, not on the hunger or distractions. Teach me to rely on Your strength and draw closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

2. Set a Goal for Your Fast

What do you want to focus on during your fast? It could be spiritual growth, repentance, seeking guidance for a decision, or interceding for someone. Be clear about your purpose so you can stay focused.

3. Choose the Type of Fast

Here are a few beginner-friendly options:

  • Partial Fast: Skip one meal and use that time for prayer and Bible study.

  • Daniel Fast: Eat only fruits, vegetables, and water (Daniel 1:12).

  • Intermittent Fast: Fast for a set period of the day, such as from sunrise to sunset.

Pick what feels realistic for you, especially if it’s your first time.

4. Plan Your Time with God

Decide how you will spend the time you would normally spend eating. You could:

Read and meditate on Scripture. Start with Isaiah 58, which talks about true fasting. Pray intentionally. Write down your prayers to stay focused. Worship through songs or journaling.

5. Start Small and Build Up

You don’t have to go all-in on a long fast. Try fasting for one meal, or even for a few hours, and gradually extend the duration as you grow more comfortable.

What to Do During Your Fast

While fasting, your focus should be on God. Here’s how to make the most of it:

1. Meditate on Scripture: Use this time to dive deep into God’s Word. A great passage is Psalm 42:1-2: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

2. Pray Constantly: Use this opportunity to share your heart with God, intercede for others, and listen for His voice.

3. Resist Distractions: It’s natural for hunger or fatigue to creep in, but use those moments as reminders to pray and rely on God’s strength.

Breaking Your Fast

When you are ready to end your fast, don’t rush back to heavy meals. Start with something light and easy on your stomach, like soup or fruit. Reflect on what you have learned and thank God for guiding you.

A Prayer for Your Fast

Here’s a prayer you can use as you begin:

“Dear Lord, thank You for this opportunity to seek You through fasting. As I set aside food, I ask that You fill me with Your presence and guide my thoughts. Teach me to trust You more, and help me to hear Your voice clearly. Strengthen my body and spirit as I commit this time to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Encouragement for Your Journey

Fasting isn’t about being perfect — it’s about your heart. Even if it feels difficult at first, remember that God sees your effort and will honour your desire to grow closer to Him. As you take this step of faith, trust that He will lead you, strengthen you, and reveal Himself in new ways.
